FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What will my first visit be like?

When you arrive for your first appointment, you'll need to fill out a few forms and provide us with your insurance information. Then you'll see the physical therapist, who will ask about your medical history before performing an evaluation, which may include things like palpation of muscle spasms and testing of strength and range of motion. Then, in consultation with you and your doctor, she'll draw up a treatment plan specifically tailored to the problems you're having.  Be sure to wear clothing that allows you to perform exercises. For people with knee concerns, please wear or bring shorts.

Physical therapy is basically torture, isn't it?

No, it shouldn't be! When physical therapy is done properly by a trained professional, working within a program specially designed for your individual needs, you should experience a minimum of pain. If you do feel pain, you should tell your therapist immediately. This is one reason why it's important to have a therapist who is caring and with whom you feel at ease. Cathy is committed to creating a comfortable environment for her patients that minimizes pain and maximizes the potential of each individual to improve.

Do I really need physical therapy?  Won't my pain fade away in time?

With many types of trauma or illness, your body's healing power just isn't enough. In the same way you wouldn't dream of trying to beat a serious infection without medication, you can't always expect your body to return to full functionality without proper aid and guidance. In fact, if you simply “wait it out” or use a plan you've found on the Internet, you're more likely to cause yourself further harm than you are to get better.

Does Therapy First have any specialties?

Cathy Pierce is capable and experienced in all the major techniques of physical therapy, but here are a few examples of treatments with which she has achieved excellent results:

  • The McKenzie Method – This comprehensive program of treatment for back and neck pain uses an array of active strategies to quickly restore normal function and prevent recurrence.

  • Kinesio Tex Taping – This relatively new technique from the world of sports medicine involves the professional application of a special elastic tape to reduce strain on the affected tissue, allowing it to return to full use more quickly. Kinesio Tex Tape found international fame when US beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh was seen competing in the 2008 Summer Olympics wearing the tape on her shoulder.

  • McConnell Taping – Sometimes, due to misuse or injury, the kneecap will track incorrectly during movement, causing pain. McConnell taping applies pressure to the knee with the dual aim of giving the patient immediate relief and (in conjunction with exercise) correcting the problem.

  • Arthritis Association Aquatics – Cathy is certified by the Arthritis Association to teach specialized exercises in the pool. These exercises are designed to be very gentle on arthritic joints while improving strength, balance, range of motion, and coordination.
